Jimmy began studying bass guitar at the age of thirteen. This phenomenal international bassist and songwriter was taught by well known Detroit bassist Rod Hicks, who performed with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1969 at Woodstock.
In 1975 Jimmy began performing with local rock, jazz fusion and R&B bands. Jimmy was influenced by artists such as Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clark, Chris Squire (from Yes), Monk Montgomery, James Jamerson, Joe Osborn, Larry Graham and numerous others.
In the late 1970's Jimmy Ali began writing and arranging songs and was soon introduced to George Clinton, founder of "P. Funk" who was impressed with his writing. He asked Jimmy to record in a female spin-off group of "P. Funk" called "Parlet." Jimmy's first single was "Wolf Tickets" on the album Play me or Trade Me.
Throughout his career Jimmy has played with the likes of sax men Ronnie Laws, Kirk Whalum, jazz vocalist Angela Bofill, jazz keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith, and Grammy Award-winning keyboardist Bob James.
Jimmy has recorded with legendary Motown guitarist Dennis Coffey and he has had the pleasure of performing on several symphony dates made for cable television and conducted by principal flutist for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Ervin Monroe.
